With over 300 entries from Supermalt fans across the UK, we were overwhelmed by the creativity, passion, and love you showed in the Design Your Can competition. After a rigorous judging process by our panel, it’s time to meet your winners!

Celebration of Culture

Sâde Popoola

Sade, also known as Shadz, is a 25-year-old British-Nigerian illustrator based in London/Milton Keynes. Inspired by animated characters and pop art from a young age, her work blends minimalist design, bold colour, and rich texture. Shadz’s art celebrates culture and identity, creating space for marginalised voices and reflecting her passion for inclusive representation.

Inspiration behind the design

‘A Taste of Home’

Growing up mainly in the UK, my direct experience of Nigeria has been limited, but art has been a powerful way for me to explore and connect with my heritage. Nigerian culture is so rich and influential that it crosses borders and is celebrated around the world.

For this piece, I wanted to visualise what immediately comes to mind when I think of Nigerian culture—from plantain and danfo buses to women ‘backing’ their babies with vibrant Ankara cloth. Rather than focusing on a single element, I chose to create a lively tapestry of these cultural symbols, all centred around the iconic Supermalt bottle.

The final illustration uses a simplistic, bold style paired with a complex, layered composition to form a vibrant collage of everyday Nigerian life. Through bright colours inspired by traditional clothing and scenery, I wanted to capture the energy and warmth of home. This digital illustration reflects how brands like Supermalt help strengthen cultural bonds across the diaspora, offering a ‘Taste of Home’ wherever you are in the world.

Community

Joyce Zengamambu

Joyce Zengamambu is a 23-year-old artist born in London, originally from the Democratic Republic of Congo. She started creating art when she was a teenager, as hobby, sketching and experimenting with oil paints. However, her journey in art took an unexpected pause when she pursued a degree in architecture, dedicating 3 years to studying the built environment, structure, and design.

Whilst architecture refined her creative thinking, her artwork now explores themes of community, identity, and togetherness. She is particularly inspired by everyday moments of both physical and emotional spaces where people share stories, laughter, and presence.

Inspiration behind the design

My design is centred around “That Chair”, the title of my new painting featured in the piece. It’s inspired by my memories of gathering around the garden with friends, family and neighbours- moments filled with laughter, music and good food. There was nothing fancy about it but it’s what made it feel so real. Those old plastic chairs were brought out year after year. I don’t use it as much anymore but today, it has become a symbol of togetherness and community. They hold conversation, memories, and the occasional spilled drink. This design is my way of showing how something as ordinary as a plastic chair can be associated with being surrounded with your people. My painting simply wants to capture that nostalgic, community feeling.

Mabutho Msimanga

Mabutho Msimanga is a graphic designer with a passion for turning ideas into visuals that connect. He loves art and design because it conveys his thoughts and feelings much better than his words can.

Inspiration behind the design

The concept behind the design is a celebration of all the good times past and a premise of those to come. How somehow Supermalt has always been in the background of all of those good time, Big or small. From Saturday mornings to New year’s night. It highlights how Supermalt has always been our thing and still is. The design celebrates when the brand was started 1972, showcases a celebration of good time with the toast in the background. The green background colour celebrates the brands Nigerian heritage. The rest of the elements used create a sense of fun, excitement and energy which is what the brand means to me

Our judging panel is made up of creative industry experts as well as representatives from WGLA and Supermalt. Winning designs will be based on creativity, originality, and of course sticking to the brief!

Mark Miller

Mark Miller Director, Tate Learning

Mark is the chair judge of Design Your Can. He joined Tate in 2006 and is responsible for the creation and development of transformational initiatives such as Tate Collective, and Circuit. Fundamental to this work is presenting unique and expansive opportunities that bring together multidisciplinary art, people and public space to create social, and cultural growth, that resonate with the rich collective cultures we experience. Mark is proud to chair the judging panel and excited to discover new and emerging talent through this competition.

Lindsay Brown

Lindsay Brown Marketing Manager (SMUK)

Lindsay has 13 years’ experience working in FMCG marketing across a wide variety of brands and categories. Working with creatives is a key part of her role and packaging design is a particular area of interest. She’s thrilled to be a part of this initiative and having worked on different brand redesigns, new product launches and limited-edition packs across the years she’s very excited to see all the competition submissions!

Delyth Lindo

Delyth Lindo Community Engagement Manager (WGLA)

Delyth plays a pivotal role in the Windrush Generation Legacy Association Charity, she is a passionate advocate of the WGLA’s mission to preserve the Windrush legacy and to engage and educate future generations. Delyth is thrilled to have the opportunity to be a judge on the Design Your Can panel and is eager to encourage Global Majority creatives from across the UK to get involved and showcase their talent.

Daniel is the founder of Creator of Art, a platform designed to enhance the visibility of independent artists in the fields of art and fashion. Daniel has always been passionate about creativity and art, he is a supporter of established and emerging creatives across various mediums and is excited to see how the creative landscape evolves and becomes more inclusive. Daniel is keen to review entries from innovative designers with bold ideas.

Damel Carayol

Damel Carayol Founder of Creator of Art

Damel is a musician, poet, visual artist and activist from The Gambia. His creative pursuits have allowed him to tour, produce, exhibit and perform across the world. Damel is a part of the Grenfell Community and has been actively involved in the fight against injustice since the tragedy in 2017. Throughout his career, Damel has aimed to elevate voices that have historically been quelled and he looks forward to celebrating the creativity in this competition.
